THE PEOPLE OF PLAINS

We are a small rural congregation whose population is largely drawn from St. Thomas and the rural area that surrounds the church.  The congregation itself is comprised of a wide spectrum of ages and households from 1 person households to extended family groupings.

The church was the first Baptist church established in the Township of Yarmouth and was built on the Oak Plains of South Yarmouth Township, hence its name, First Yarmouth (Plains) Baptist Church.  We are affiliated with the Elgin Baptist Association and the Baptist Convention of Ontario and Quebec.

The current sanctuary was constructed in l981 and a building addition extending the hall, kitchen, Sunday School rooms and washroom facilities was added in 2002.

The theology of the congregation is mixed, reflecting a variety of denominational backgrounds, ages and faith experiences.  The congregation as a whole strives to be open to new ideas, a variety of opinions and sensitive to matters concerning the heart and spirit.

Historic Baptist principles upholding  the Lordship of Christ and the authority of Scripture; the priesthood of  believers; the autonomy of the local church; individual soul liberty; voluntary association with other churches for the purposes of worship, mutual encouragement and mission;  and congregational governance exercised under God’s leading,  shape the church’s understanding and practice of ministry.

The congregation’s Commitment Statement located at the top of the page provides a focus for the congregation and leaders as worship and programs are planned and implemented and as we seek to understand and reach the needs of our community.
